A Minimalist Approach to Viral Marketing

You haven't got the millions of euros for that real great ad campaign ? Hey, no problem - a good idea and an email-client is just all you need. Case in point: this simple car sales ad... (the ad seems to be no longer online - sorry)

Mobile.de is a German online market for new and used vehicles. Here everybody can place an ad to sell his old car. That's exactly what a certain Lisa Kaiser did, apparently because she want's to get rid of her not-so-old Volkswagen. As she writes in the description, the car is in perfect shape. Well, except for these small scratches on the left fender. So far so good, but here comes the catch: she also tells the reader where the scratches came from. I don't want to get to much into details, but it has something to do with her now estranged husband and certain leisure activities... ;-)

Anyway, these few additional words turn an otherwise boring car sales ad into a highly efficient viral agent, which suddenly everybody sends around. I got the URL three times in the last 24 hours and can't stop wondering how many unique visitors mobile.de gets with a CPM of just 0 euro.

So, that's all you need to get an avalanche started: a few lines of text and a mail-to-button...

P.S.: I really would like to know if this ad is authentic or an extremely slick idea!? If you have any information concerning this mystery, please drop me a line...
